About us

Boeing Defence Australia is shaping the future of aerospace and delivering some of the nation's most important programs for the Australian Defence Force.

Joining us is a chance to make your mark, working with a diverse team that is united in pushing the boundaries of imagination and excellence.

We currently employ more than 2,500 people across 14 sites in Australia and three international locations and have a range of opportunities available as we plan for future growth.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to support the LAND4140 Battle Management System (BMS) Project as part of the Battlespace Communications System (BCS) Enterprise. This role is based in Brisbane.

BCS is a cutting-edge networking product that is the centerpiece for multiple projects and campaigns. The BCS combines both developmental and off the shelf hardware and software to provide world leading communications capability for ADF personnel. It can be rapidly deployed from anywhere, and its modular design provides a flexible, scalable solution that can be customized for various mission needs. The LAND4140 BMS Project will enhance and update the ADF's existing BMS with a world leading mission critical Command and Control (C2) capability.

A core technical challenge for this role is integrating and optimising the BMS ecosystem across multiple existing platforms and infrastructure, to deliver a cohesive, connected BMS capability to Army.

Your work will have real operational impact — supporting Australian Army personnel in the field and underpinning critical, real-world decision-making. Releases are planned annually, but engineering studies and evaluations happen far more frequently — you'll be expected to prototype, test ideas quickly, and fail fast to drive progress between releases.

As a senior member of a software team of up to 10 engineers, you will be influential in shaping the solution — working closely with architects and technical leads to shape designs and roadmaps, not just implement them. We're looking for innovators who want to drive the best outcome for capability, not just deliver to spec. You'll lead technical scope on key work packages, mentor junior and graduate engineers, and help identify and prioritise tasking across the team, while remaining hands-on in design, development and integration. There is a clear pathway to progress into a Technical Lead role, including across other Boeing Defence Australia projects and teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical scope and solution design for assigned BMS/BCS work packages, from requirements through to delivery.
  • Partner with architects and technical leads to shape BMS/BCS solution architecture and the technical roadmap.
  • Mentor junior and graduate software engineers through code review, pairing and structured technical guidance.
  • Identify and prioritise team tasking in collaboration with technical leads and the Product Owner, balancing delivery against Army's priorities.
  • Design, build and test software features primarily in Python, integrating with existing hardware and network infrastructure.
  • Apply secure coding and cyber security practices throughout the development lifecycle, including threat modelling and secure-by-design decisions.
  • Containerise and deploy software across development, test and field-deployable environments, including disconnected and edge configurations.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex software, integration and deployment issues across the BMS/BCS stack.
  • Run rapid prototypes and technical spikes between release cycles, feeding findings into engineering studies and assessments.
  • Collaborate day-to-day with a diverse, cross-disciplinary team of software, systems and hardware engineers to deliver a cohesive BMS capability.

Experience/Qualifications

Essential:

  • Applicants must be Australian Citizens, as the role requires the ability to obtain a Defence security clearance (no current clearance is required to apply).
  • Python and/or Java skills, with versatile, hands-on experience deploying and integrating software across a broad range of platforms and environments (e.g. cloud, containerised, on-premises, Microsoft-based and field/disconnected systems).
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical scope and mentoring or guiding junior engineers in a software engineering environment.
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage effectively across organisational boundaries and hierarchies.

We invite a diverse range of people to apply, including people from outside of the defence industry.

Desirable:

  • Experience with containerisation technologies (e.g. PodMan, Docker, Kubernetes) and container orchestration.
  • Experience with cloud platforms and services (e.g. AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Experience with Microsoft software deployment technologies (e.g. SCCM/Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager, Windows Server deployment).
  • Experience deploying and supporting software across a mix of environments (cloud, on-premises, and field/edge or disconnected deployments).
  • Experience with deployable communications networks or tactical/field communications systems.
  • Experience with situational awareness and C2 systems.
  • Experience within Defence or complex engineering project environments.
  • Linux skills with an understanding of the OS, Sys-admin and Virtualization.
  • Experience in building secure applications in a Linux environment.
  • Experience with additional software languages and open-source packages (e.g. java-script, C programming) and UI design.
  • IP networking protocols and implementation of network security.
  • Familiarity with security-focused development practices (e.g. DevSecOps, secure SDLC, Essential Eight).
  • Comfortable operating across the full software development lifecycle with an agile mindset.

Culture

Our team has a unique culture, which prioritises innovation whilst maintaining flexibility and fun. We are collaborative, adaptable and outcome-focused. You'll find yourself working in an inclusive team, where people really matter. We work flexibly, with a hybrid in office/work from home arrangement.

We're looking for someone who gives a damn, follows through on commitments, is curious and courageous enough to do cool things, and wants to help shape the future of the capability.

At Boeing, we innovate and collaborate to make the world a better place. From the seabed to outer space you can contribute to work that matters with a company where diversity, equity and inclusion are core values. We're committed to fostering an environment for every teammate that's welcoming, respectful and inclusive, with great opportunity for professional growth. Find your future with us.
