Boeing Commercial Airplanes is excited to offer opportunities for a Gear Cutting Machine Operator A to join our Facilities team in Portland, Oregon.

Join our innovative team as a Gear Cutting Machine Operator A, where you will independently set up, operate, and adjust a variety of gear cutting, shaping, and grinding machines, ensuring that each part meets stringent specifications. Your ability to interpret technical drawings and work orders will guide you in selecting the appropriate tools and fixtures, while your proficiency with precision measuring instruments will ensure accuracy throughout the machining process. You will play a key role in monitoring machine operations, conducting test runs, and performing necessary adjustments to maintain optimal performance. Position Responsibilities:

  • Obtain work assignments from the Daily Dispatch List (DDL), team leader, or supervisor based on schedule and priority.

  • Review work orders and obtain necessary drawings and specifications to determine machining requirements.

  • Set up, operate, and adjust various types of gear cutting, shaping, and grinding machines, including CNC and conventional equipment.

  • Use precision measuring instruments and gauges to check machined parts for finish and dimensions.

  • Select and secure appropriate tools, fixtures, and machine attachments to efficiently complete assigned work.

  • Perform layout work and sequence operations using shop mathematics, including geometry and trigonometry.

  • Monitor machine setups and check for any missing or damaged equipment before operation.

  • Operate overhead cranes and material handling equipment to move parts and materials as required.

  • Perform routine maintenance on tools and equipment, including dressing grinding wheels and sharpening cutting tools.

  • Conduct test runs and make adjustments to ensure machining processes meet specifications before production runs.

  • Document work performed, including quantities and any discrepancies, and communicate with supervisors regarding job status.

  • Handle and dispose of hazardous materials in accordance with safety regulations and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

  • Collaborate with internal and external organizations to resolve issues and improve production processes.

  • Maintain personal and tool certifications to ensure compliance with safety and operational standards.

  • Suggest improvements to production methods and processes to enhance efficiency and quality.

Physical Demands and Potential Hazards:

  • Perform physical tasks that include lifting weights ranging from 10-15 lbs to 15-35 lbs.

  • Engage in various movements such as reaching, handling, turning, twisting, lifting, lowering, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and squatting.

  • Work in environments that may involve contact with metals, solvents, and coolants.

  • Operate in proximity to moving parts and tools, sharp cutters, and potential slipping hazards.

  • Adapt to varying noise levels and atmospheric conditions.

  • Utilize personal safety gear to protect face/eyes, hands/arms, and feet while performing job duties.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee

Basic Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in gear cell machining/cutting.

  • 5+ years of experience working with detailed work instructions or reading and interpreting blueprints and drawings.

  • 5+ years of experience using precision measuring tools and equipment such as micrometers, calipers and dial indicators, etc.

  • Capable of lifting, pushing and pulling up to 35 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience with CNC mill and lathe machines.

  • Associate degree in machine tool technology or equivalent.

Typical Education & Experience:

  • High school graduate or GED preferred. 

Relocation:

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.  

Summary pay range: $31.00 - $54.24/hour
