Job Description

At Boeing, we innovate and collaborate to make the world a better place. We’re committed to fostering an environment for every teammate that’s welcoming, respectful and inclusive, with great opportunity for professional growth. Find your future with us.

Spectrolab, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of The Boeing Company, seeks a Semiconductor Engineer to serve as Solar Cell Device and Panel Product Engineer who can define, characterize, and qualify solar cell devices and panel assemblies as well as the associated materials and processes for current programs and next generation technology developments.  You will provide product and process support to meet customer, product performance, quality improvement, design for manufacture (DFM), and cost reduction objectives.

Spectrolab is the world’s leading merchant supplier of the highest efficiency multijunction solar cells for spacecraft power systems, with proven reliability drawn from 65 years of space heritage.  Spectrolab’s state-of-the-art space solar cells and panels power satellites in Earth’s orbit, as well as the International

Space Station.  Since its founding in 1956, Spectrolab has led the way in the development of high efficiency solar cells for space missions.  During the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, a Spectrolab product became the first solar panel to be placed on the moon.

Responsibilities

  • Execute non-recurring engineering in support of new solar cell device definition and existing technology optimization to meet customer interface and performance requirements.
  • Translate customer requirements into documentation for material procurement, product design, manufacturing, and testing.
  • Participate in validation and qualification for new technology developments, improvements, and modification at both the solar cell device and panel assembly levels.
  • Identify long lead materials, tooling, and testing requirements for the product as well as any associated support software.
  • Write qualification plans, design review documentation, and design analysis validation reports.
  • Make effective presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Review manufacturing documents for assigned products and support manufacturing for correct implementation of the design.
  • Provide timely resolution of production and supplier quality issues consistent with the product qualification baseline as well as any applicable customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in and lead root cause analysis and corrective action (RCCA) to resolve product or process performance issues.
  • Perform radiation, power, mass, EMC, reliability, and FMEA analyses to optimize product design within the confines of schedule and cost objectives.
  • Review customer requests for quotation (RFQ/RFP) and assist in definition of product configuration and preparation of proposals for space solar cells and terrestrial solar cells and other related devices based on Spectrolab’s III-V growth and processing capabilities.
  • Adopt an entrepreneurial mindset to identify and execute continuous improvement opportunities, championing new breakthrough product or process ideas to reduce process cycle time, reduce product cost, and improve product or market capture performance.
  • Participate in process improvement efforts and factory automation and test circuit design for solar cell devices, panel assembly, wing assembly, and illuminations products.
