Boeing Commercial Airplanes is excited to offer opportunities for a Shot Peening Operator to join our Fabrication team in Puyallup and Auburn, Washington.

As a Shot Peening Operator, you will be at the forefront of our manufacturing process, responsible for enhancing the durability and performance of critical components. Your expertise in setting up and operating advanced shot peening equipment will ensure that each part meets the precise specifications required for optimal functionality. You will work with a variety of machines, developing and editing programs to achieve the desired surface conditioning while adhering to strict quality standards. Your role will involve interpreting technical documents, monitoring machine performance, and collaborating with team members to troubleshoot and resolve any issues that arise during production.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Set up, operate, and adjust shot peening equipment to achieve specified contours or straighten parts, materials, and tools.

  • Determine machine settings and adjustments required for optimal surface conditioning of parts, test panels, and tooling.

  • Independently set up and operate various conventional and NC shot peen machines, including multiple nozzle and multi-axis systems.

  • Develop and edit programs to ensure precise surface conditioning of parts and materials.

  • Process test specimens and sample parts, laying out reference points or guidelines for shot peening operations.

  • Verify intensity of the peening process at the beginning of a part run or each shift to ensure quality control.

  • Operate automated sanding machines to achieve required surface finishes by removing tool marks and shot peening pits.

  • Use cranes to load and unload parts, ensuring safe and efficient handling.

  • Interpret blueprints, sketches, and work orders to determine job requirements and ensure proper execution.

  • Record data on setups, adjustments, processing times, and shot sizes for future reference and quality control.

  • Mask or shield areas that must be protected from shot peening using appropriate tooling or improvised covers.

  • Check part configuration using shot bags and adjust contours as necessary to meet specifications.

  • Prepare detail parts for manual/automated compression shot peening, including cleaning, masking, and plugging areas that must be protected.

  • Monitor machine operations for unusual vibrations or sounds and visually inspect for smooth operation.

  • Maintain personal and tool certifications, ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety protocols.

Physical Demands and Potential Hazards:

  • Perform physical tasks that include lifting weights ranging from 10-15 lbs to 15-35 lbs.

  • Engage in various movements such as reaching, handling, turning, twisting, lifting, lowering, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and squatting.

  • Work in environments that may involve contact with metals, solvents, and coolants.

  • Operate in proximity to moving parts and tools, sharp cutters, and potential slipping hazards.

  • Adapt to varying noise levels and atmospheric conditions.

  • Utilize personal safety gear to protect face/eyes, hands/arms, and feet while performing job duties.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee

Basic Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of experience using software applications for internet navigation, email, Microsoft Suite and/or other specialized computer applications.

  • 1+ years of experience using basic math (e.g. addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) in a workplace environment.

  • Experience with metal parts fabrication and/or machine shop processes.

  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings, blueprints, schematics, and specifications.

  • Experience setting and using precision measuring tools; equipment such as micrometers, calipers, and/or dial indicators.

  • Must be able to lift, push and pull up to 35 pounds frequently within an 8 hour shift.

  • Fluent in both verbal and written English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience running a shot peen machine

  • Familiarization in Numerical Control Machines

Typical Education & Experience:

High school graduate or GED preferred.

Summary pay range: $26.00 – $51.39 per hour
