The Advanced Technology Support Lab (ATSL) within M&PT is looking for a Mid-level Manufacturing Research and Development Engineer to support the Boeing Defense Systems programs in Tukwila, WA.

These include the P-8A Poseidon, KC-46A Pegasus, and E-7A Wedgetail. The ATSL is responsible for researching, evaluating, developing, testing, and implementing highly technical solutions in support of Boeing Defense Systems programs, including the associated assembly, modification, and delivery centers for each aircraft.

This engineering position will join our ATSL team to work on technology development projects at the Developmental Center location in Tukwila. Our current projects involve mechatronics and automation such as Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV), Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV), a refueling handling system, and an object identification robot. The tasks performed by our engineers involve mechanical and electrical design, programming controls, assembling, and testing prototype hardware/systems. Our projects utilize additive and subtractive manufacturing methods to quickly build prototypes, shop aids, and tools.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Define and manage development projects to committed schedules

  • Utilize in-lab equipment and off-the-shelf technology to design, program, prototype, and test early-stage solutions for production environments in collaboration with lab lead and teammates

  • Develop engineering solutions involving mechanisms/kinematics and embedded systems (Raspberry Pi’s, Arduinos) with software/hardware interface in robotics & automation projects

  • Design and program control systems for mechatronic applications

  • Design, create, and validate electrical/electronic circuits for mechatronic applications

  • Design mechanical parts and assemblies using CATIA or SolidWorks

  • Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on parts intended for loadbearing purposes

  • Utilize additive manufacturing in the fabrication of shop aids, tools, and prototypes

  • Integrate knowledge of factory environment, additive manufacturing, material developments, and emergent technologies, into support solutions

  • Develop prototype solutions and process improvements in cooperation with aircraft mechanics and program leads

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the listed location.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship.  An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or non-US equivalent qualifications directly related to the work statement

  • Experience with machine or mechanical assembly design

  • Experience with Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) using CATIA or SolidWorks and performing FEA analysis

  • Experience with programming and control system design; Arduino, C, Python, embedded systems/microcontrollers

  • Experience with electrical/electronic circuit design and assembly

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • 5+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Experience with mechatronics design

  • Experience with PID control design and optimization

  • Experience with circuit and schematic design programs such as KiCAD

  • Experience with robotic kinematics analysis and determination

  • Familiarity with additive manufacturing pertaining to the design and fabrication of shop aids, tools, and prototypes

  • Familiarity with machining tools, equipment, and processes

Typical Education/Experience:

Level 3: Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), computer science, engineering data science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience or non-US equivalent qualifications. In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Typical summary pay range: $114,750 - $155,250
